Roseleen Shanley / A blog for the children - Why do we love snow?

Last weekend we were lucky in Aberdeenshire because it snowed. Sometimes, it snows so much we get days off school which makes us happy because we can play in the snow. Does that ever happen to you?

The snow this time was not too deep but it looked lovely. Sometimes it blows off the fields and lies in deep bundles where the wind blows it. We call that drifts, and sometimes drifts block roads and you can’t drive your car through a drift. In a nearby village called Whiterashes, people got caught in a drift and had to get out their cars and spend the night in a local hall. Adults in the village brought them food but they had to wait until a snow plough came and cleared the road the next day.

I opened my curtains on Sunday morning and could not believe what I saw on the window.

There was a little heart at the corner of the window.

There was a little heart at the corner of the window.

I smiled so much when I saw it and wondered how it got there.

Perhaps you can tell me how you think it appeared on my window because I have no idea how it got there.

Lots of children went out sledging in my village and I could hear them playing and laughing. They all had a great time.

So why do we love snow?  Why do we build snowmen? Why does snow make us play and laugh, even when it is so cold?

If you have any answers to these questions, do let me know.

We had fun in the snow last weekend too. It never normally snows in Leith. Me and my friends were coming home after a late night out. even though it was only lying a little bit we managed to scrape some snow into snowballs and had a fun time. I think we love snow because it reminds us that we are all children!

Really enjoyed reading all your blogs.I think nature left you a lovely heart shaped message!
Nature can really lift a persons spirit. On the top of Scottish mountains I have been completely awestruck at the beauty and vastness of the unspoilt terrain. Seeing is believing! It is so good for the soul to have memorable moments with nature.Ideally all youngsters need an opportunity to appreciate the environment beyond the confines of an urban existence…..to experience the sounds and silence of nature. I think your thoughts on Eco-Psychology curriculum are so pertinent.I think it is the way forward. Creating a climate for change. Knowledge and experience working in tandem……an ideal world!

I looked at this snow item a week or so ago and came up with a few ideas but couldn’t figure out how to comment (my first blog visit. But I made a few snowmen and sledged on both occasions we had snow recently. To my mind the fascination is something to do with the creativity and expression snow provides opportunities for and of course tremendous fun. It also changes the appearance of our landscape and environment on a temporary basis and brightens and creates beautiful images, shapes and patterns.

I think snow is about the best reason I can think of for living in Aberdeenshire. In terms of working with children, it is just brilliant. I have in fact managed to come up with more than 25 curriculum related activities for when the snow arrives. And yes…I blog about it too!

We love snow because we rarely get it. It makes us cold but we laugh because there are games we can play only when snow is here.

I agree with Emma. I think we love the snow because it takes us back to the time when we were all young and carefree. The cold didn’t bother us and a fall didn’t hurt so much. Now we delight in looking out the window at the beautiful, clean white picture before us. Thank you for reminding us of the simple things that bring pleasure (and a few moans ha ha)

Hi there, I’d just like to say how touched I was by the heart on your window. I think snow is a magical blanket, it lifts the spirit and brings joy. I really enjoy reading your blogs, and look forward to your next.
