Going Solo

The “solo day” was one which I enjoyed and had not experienced since my early scouting days . The adjusting to silence and being on your own was in itself a challenge but recognising that this was part of the learning process it was easy to accept and ” an open mind” attitude prevailed. The day was eventful, once I had prepared my place, as I had decided to ” wait and see what the day brought ” and take the time to see what happened over the day. A variety of experiences happened over the day and all related to the natural habitat in Knoydart; a heron coming in to rest and seek out food, highland cows roving the glen, deers calling to each other and flights of geese flying to their nesting places for winter…Scotland as its best. Albert Einstein said about creativity ” Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them”  – the solo gave me a different perspective to look at some problems. The ” place a left for another; ” Good friend in the path I have some , There followeth another ….I am leaving this place for him” ..adapted The Bridge Builder by Allen Dromgoole.

Making the story real

The introduction kick starts the process, the communications start and then the Induction meeting happens and suddenly the story becomes real for us all and its a move into learning a new style of leadership change with an open mind. The arrival was exceptional as it was probably one of the hottest days we had…blue skies and calm seas and Knoydart in all its glory. The settling in afternoon at the Old Byre period was good and let us become accustomed to our surroundings and we were given an introduction to the format of the coming week, a welcome meal and sound nights sleep.

The morning was an introduction to the tepee and the challenge of seeking out objects that took our attention and to reflect on them from our point of view. Interesting when we started to look at Maslow’s Hierarchy and where we were fitting in. A steady climb followed in the afternoon up one of the hills, fighting with bracken and pot holes, and getting us ready for the ” solo” day we had a period of time on our own to feel what it was like. the work of a spider in weaving its web is truly amazing and one can see how it inspired Robert the Bruce..The prep talk followed that evening and all rules and safety were covered. The ” solo” is simiar to the Indian / Aboriginal passage into adult life and one which we had many years ago when you left school and entered the world of work at a very early age to work in the fields, factories or mines.

The greatest journey…

Yes we all know the famous quote but for us this could be the first step in change for the rest of our lives…and maybe not. Like the rest have packed the bags but being the usual leaving sleep to the last… The week has been one of making sure all the work is left for others to   ensure it happens, house sorted, fridge emptied…you know how it goes…like a race to get finished and  then some more and then what…the unexpected ,  the pace slows…almost like a space walk we move in a slower atmosphere, switched off for the outside world and having a different focus in our lives or several days ;  a rare gift that has been given to us – time.

Looking at the weather…and a break

Hi checking out the weather and it seems favourable…so far so good…    It’s never till you start setting dates in your diary that time takes on a new dimension and you are chasing up all the  “have to do’s”  before you set off and that is what this week has been about. Have been getting asked about the week and my response of ; no meat, no drink, minimal technology …. but wonderful company and a diary to note down my thoughts – so can be bad -)

My inspirational thought came in this morning from Walk The Talk and it was quite apt ;

True friendship is at the core of any happy life. If our family is our root system, our friends are our fellow branches. We’re all striving together, supporting one another, providing shade and comfort.
